Malatya province: The earth is shaking again in Turkey

One person was killed, 69 others injured – there was another severe aftershock in Turkey. The tremors are said to have reached a magnitude of 5.5. Several buildings collapsed.

Three weeks after the severe earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, the earth trembled again in the Turkish province of Malatya in eastern Anatolia. At least one person was killed and 69 people injured, the state news agency Anadolu reported.

The quake had a magnitude of 5.5, according to the Kandilli earthquake monitor. Its epicenter was therefore in the municipality of Yesilyurt.

Daughter and father under the rubble

More than two dozen houses collapsed. The city’s mayor, Mehmet Cinar, told Habertürk television that a four-story house was among them, with a father and daughter trapped in the rubble. They would have wanted to get some belongings from the already damaged building.

Elsewhere in Malatya, another house fell on several vehicles. Rescue teams searched the rubble, as Habertürk reported.

Earthquake in Malatya three weeks ago

Malatya province was also hit hard by the violent February 6 earthquake. According to the mayor, around 2,300 people died in Malatya alone. According to official information, more than 44,000 people have died in Turkey alone and at least 5,900 people in Syria as a result of the double earthquakes and their consequences.
