The best oat milk? The homemade one! Three DIY variants to imitate
It doesn’t always have to be the expensive brand from the supermarket. You can also make delicious oat milk yourself quickly and cheaply. What do you need? We’ll tell you!

The vegan milk substitute consists of nothing more than oats and water. Depending on your taste preference, a few additives can be added to give the whole thing a savory or sweet note – that’s it. If you now have a mixer, a linen cloth and a bottle ready for filling, you can get started straight away. With these three variants, homemade oat milk is definitely a success.
What you need
- 100 g oat flakes (tender)
- 1 liter of water
- For that extra kick: salt, vanilla, agave syrup, honey or dates
- Blender or blender
- Filter: Nut milk bags are suitable, but linen cloths or laundry bags also work
1. When things have to happen quickly
If time is short, this quick recipe will help you in just three steps and in just a few minutes. For the express version, choose delicate oat flakes. Simply fill it with the water and, depending on your taste, a little salt or sweetener into the blender. Mix everything vigorously for two to three minutes. After that, all you have to do is strain the liquid through a nut milk bag into a container until you can no longer squeeze out any liquid.
2. Bring to the boil once, please
For this variant, bring water to the boil in a pot. Because the oat flakes will swell when you cool them later, a little more water is needed here – 1.5 liters. When the water is bubbling, add the oat flakes and salt or sweetener as desired. Let the mixture simmer for a minute or two. After the mixture has cooled, you can puree it finely with the stand mixer on high speed. Then squeeze the molasses through a filter of your choice, nut milk bag or cloth until you can no longer squeeze out any liquid and pour the oat milk into a bottle.
3. Let it swell comfortably
It doesn’t always have to be oat flakes, you can also use whole grains. However, you have to soak them for at least 12 hours before straining them and then mixing them with a liter of fresh water and pureeing them finely. Then you just have to strain the liquid through your chosen filter and bottle the oat milk.
