Ayad Akhtar, President of PEN America, the largest and most influential PEN in the world, delivered a furious, if for many somewhat disconcerting, speech during his visit to the then new PEN Berlin in December. Akhtar (“Homeland Elegies”) warned that free speech in the USA was under threat. He diagnosed a “crisis of democracy” that was “to a large extent a crisis of freedom of speech and freedom of opinion”. In turn, he did not discover the cause of this in right-wing networks or continued Trumpism, but in an identity politics that “imposes contradictory moral maps on us”.
