Major fire in the warehouse: extinguishing work in Berlin-Neukölln continues

A warehouse in Berlin-Neukölln caught fire on Wednesday evening. Residents in much of southern Berlin have been asked to keep windows and doors closed. The fire brigade was deployed with more than 100 emergency services.

According to the Berlin fire brigade, the extinguishing work on the fire in Berlin-Neukölln will continue throughout the night. According to the emergency services, the situation at the scene of the fire was under control later in the evening, but remained tense. The fire brigade informed rbb that they assume that they will be busy extinguishing the flames and embers all night until at least the morning hours.

The major fire broke out on Wednesday evening. A huge plume of black smoke soon appeared over the city.

As a police spokesman told rbb, a Remondis warehouse on Lahnstrasse is on fire. Paper is stored there for recycling. The hall is around 5,000 square meters in size and is burning to its full extent. Other buildings are no longer in danger, a fire department spokesman told rbb.

Fighting the fire will also take a long time because the hall is in danger of collapsing. The fire brigade could therefore only extinguish the fire from the outside.

Many mobile phone users received the official warning issued by the fire brigade about an hour after the start of the operation via the Nina app and the Federal Office for Civil Protection. Specifically, there was a warning about strong smoke and odor nuisance in southern parts of the city, people in the districts concerned should keep windows and doors closed and switch off air conditioning and ventilation.

According to the recycling center operator Remondis, no one was injured. Local employees are no longer in danger either, a company spokesman told rbb.

The fire brigade came with around 120 emergency services, as announced on Twitter.
