Major fire in Essen: residential complex is on fire

Major fire in downtown Essen: A house with 50 residential units is completely on fire. The fire brigade and all emergency services have been on site since two o’clock.

The fire brigade had to move out during the night for one of the largest operations in recent years. In Essen’s Westviertel, a residential complex caught fire and was engulfed in flames. 50 residential units on four floors and around 100 people are affected. The fire brigade speaks of an “unprecedented fire.”

The fire brigade does not yet know how everyone is doing and whether all residents could be rescued from the house. According to initial reports, three residents suffered from smoke inhalation. Many of those affected are in the neighboring Audimax of the University of Duisburg-eat accommodated – partly in pajamas.
