Major disruption to Apple’s cloud services

The problems with Apple’s iCloud seem to be expanding: since Wednesday night there have been disruptions in several central services, including iCloud backups and iCloud Mail, which were not resolved by late Wednesday afternoon. Users may not be able to back up their iPhone data and access email, the company writes. Photo and video synchronization via iCloud Photos can therefore also cause problems that are not specified. According to Apple, only “some users” are affected, more precise information was not given.

Access to Apple’s web apps such as Pages and Keynote no longer seems possible for some users, and the login to iCloud.com fails. Apple’s – considered notoriously unreliable – System Status Page gave the green light again in the meantime, although the problems had obviously not been resolved. The fault is currently being displayed again.

Add to that annoying repetitive notifications on iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches asking to “update Apple ID settings.” “Some account services require you to log in again,” it says in the notification dialog, the system settings icon then shows a red mark.

Updating the settings by entering the desired user name and password usually doesn’t seem to help: under certain circumstances, the login is aborted with the error message that the account cannot be verified or that the action cannot be carried out at the moment. In some cases, the entries are accepted, but the request to update appears again a short time later. Users should ignore the Apple ID update notification for now until Apple gets its cloud services back under control.

In addition to the new problems with several iCloud services for end customers, Apple has obviously been having difficulties in the iCloud backend for developers for weeks: Apps that synchronize files, content or status functions via iCloud seem to be unreliable or work with snags for many users. The first apps have now integrated iCloud status information and alternative functions to alleviate the problems.
