Maja Haderlap’s novel “Night Women” – Culture

It has been twelve years since Maja Haderlap was awarded the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize at the Days of German Language Literature in Klagenfurt for an excerpt from her debut novel “Angel of Forgetting”. The novel itself was published in autumn 2011. Haderlap, born in Bad Eisenkappel in Carinthia in 1961, writes in both Slovenian and German. “Angel of Forgetting” was in many ways an exploration of the border area between Austria and Slovenia; a territory in which language creates identity and conflict at the same time and in which every word can become political if it is said in the supposedly wrong language.
