Maison Souquet Paris: From brothel to hotel – the most romantic hotel in the world

It’s not just any award, but the audience award from the world’s largest travel community on the web, the Travellers’ Choice Awards tripadvisor. Every year, the portal asks its users which is the most romantic hotel. In addition to sorting according to the best houses on the individual continents, the overall result is also listed in the “World” category.

A small but fine house in Paris, the Maison Souquet, took first place in the world of all “most romantic hotels” in 2019 – ahead of the Hotel Nayara Springs in the green jungle of Costa Rica and the Lani’s Suites de Luxe on the Canary Island of Lanzarote. Incidentally, the overnight prices in the last two hotels are significantly higher than in the dreamy Parisian city hotel, where prices start at 340 euros for a double room.

Boutique hotel instead of brothel

At the Maison Souquet it was an old building from the late 19th century, located near the Pigalle entertainment district. Originally it was a girls’ school, later the house became a brothel and a hotel.

Extensive renovation work began in 2013, which lasted two years and transformed the old walls into a five-star hotel.

Instead of focusing on clear aesthetics and a purist style, as has been the case with other conversion projects in the Parsian luxury hotel industry since the turn of the millennium, the committed designer Jaques Garcia has taken a completely different direction.

Like in the Arabian Nights

The French interior designer loves ornament and the playful, oriental style. Warm and dark colours, heavy damask fabrics, elegant silk wallpaper and crystal chandeliers create a very special atmosphere, reminiscent of the fairytale world of the Arabian Nights.

There are only 22 rooms available to guests at the Maison Souquet in Paris. No room is like the other. Lovers in particular seem to feel at home here, otherwise the hotel would not have made it to first place in the most romantic hotels in the world in 2018.
