With the “ZDF Magazine Royale” Jan Böhmermann and his team always get people’s minds flowing. This year’s musical episode focuses on a good mood – and even brings a long-forgotten star back to the stage.

Whether it’s the cyber security chief’s alleged Russian connections, lies about nutritional supplements or right-wing police officers: Jan Böhmermann and his team like to tackle big topics in “Magazine Royale” – and then take them apart properly. But instead of providing revelations, this week they preferred to focus on music “Mainz’s most exclusive underground club,” according to Royale Festival magazine.

“I promise you a great, a fantastic, an incredible show every week,” explains Böhmermann in the introduction to this year’s music issue of the magazine. “But let’s be honest: Sometimes it’s a bit of a lie. Sometimes the shows are more like that,” he tries to criticize himself. But things are different with the new episode. “This show is the truth.” But Böhmermann himself didn’t announce this. Instead, the stage belonged to his musical guests.

Clear the stage

And they certainly had it all. First up is Alli Neumann, who performed her song “Primetime” together with the house band, the Ehrenfeld Radio Dance Orchestra. Then there’s rap for your ears: Badmomzjay performs “How to Survive” bathed in red light. Blumgarten can even celebrate a premiere: They had not yet released their song “Mama” – and are now playing it in front of the general public for the first time.

The appearance of the US guest Oliver Tree is a little more unusual. Announced by Böhmermann as “complete garbage”, the internet eccentric, who sings from a garbage can, puts on a show with dancing garbage bags. The Domiziana who follows is allowed to perform three songs – including a costume and stage change. For the third, another star guest comes on stage: together with Ski Aggu, the singer invites you to the “Tour de Berlin”. After the techno excursion there is a nice ballad to wind down with “Baba” by Apsilon and his brother.

Böhmermann celebrates his team

In between, the magazine allows you to take a look behind the scenes. Böhmermann takes us into the depths of the studio and introduces the show’s sound engineers – “gender is not necessary,” as he mischievously emphasizes. And also answers the most important question of the evening: “Why are we doing this show today? Because we can,” jokes the boss. And then applauds for the camera, lighting, editing, production design, costumes and direction. Instead of pushing himself into the foreground, he celebrates his team extensively.

Only at the very end does Böhmermann himself appear on stage. He says he wants to perform his favorite song. Von Echt, who have not existed as a band since the beginning of the millennium. After the first verse of “You don’t have love in you” he prefers to leave the spotlight to someone else – namely none other than real singer Kim Frank, who is performing live again for the first time in over 20 years. And because it’s so beautiful, there are two encores: “Junimond” and “Weinst du”. Until Böhmermann joins in again for another verse of “You don’t have love in you.”

The reactions to the self-declared “application to host the ESC preliminary round” on social media were quite varied. While most fans thanked them for the musical excursion and the sometimes lesser-known music recommendations, others gossiped about the music episode or the guests. “Now we know why Kim Frank is no longer appearing,” said one user on Twitter. Overall, the response to this year’s musical episode was rather positive. So the ESC can come.
