news of the day

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will send missions to “secure” five nuclear power plants in Ukraine, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Chmygal said on Tuesday. “These missions are intended to secure these power plants and to record all the impacts coming from outside, in particular the strikes by the Russian aggressor”, wrote the Ukrainian official on Telegram after a meeting in Paris with the boss of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi.

He did not specify a timetable or the size of these missions, while the IAEA already has experts in Zaporozhye, the most sensitive site due to its proximity to the front and the Russian occupation. Still, according to Denys Chmygal, the IAEA experts will therefore indeed be deployed in Zaporozhye, but also in Rivne, Khmelnytsky, Pivdennooukraïnsk and… Chernobyl.

The number of the day

One billion. It is in euros the amount of donations that the international conference of support for Ukraine, organized in Paris, made it possible to garner. This billion will help the Ukrainian population to spend the winter in a country whose infrastructure has been ravaged by Russian attacks. And this billion is above all more than the 800 million demanded by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the opening of this meeting which was called “Solidarity of the Ukrainian people”.

sentence of the day

Russia is acting cowardly and […] attempts to sow terror among the population by attacking civilian infrastructure, which constitutes acts of war. »

These are the words of Emmanuel Macron pronounced at the opening of the Ukraine aid conference being held in Paris. The French president also underlined the will of the international community to help the Ukrainians “to resist during this winter” against a Russia whose objective is to “plunge them into darkness and cold”. “These strikes, which Russia openly admits are only intended to undermine the resistance of the Ukrainian people, constitute war crimes” which “will not go unpunished”, further hammered the French head of state.

The trend of the day

Ukraine must cede the territories which Russia claims should be annexed before any diplomatic negotiations, the Kremlin said on Tuesday, in response to Volodymyr Zelensky’s proposal to organize a “world peace summit”. “The Ukrainian side must take into account the realities that have developed on the ground,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov during his daily press briefing.

“These realities are that the Russian Federation has new subjects as a result of referendums that have taken place in these territories”, he added, judging “impossible any progress” diplomatic as long as Kiev “does not take into account these realities.

Dmitry Peskov also said it was “out of the question” for Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine before Christmas, another request by President Volodymyr Zelensky made Monday during a speech to the G7 countries gathered by videoconference.
