Macron asks Azerbaijan to “return to respecting the ceasefire” with Armenia

During a telephone interview, Emmanuel Macron “told President Aliyev the urgency of putting an end to hostilities, and returning to respect for the ceasefire”, indicated the Elysée, while at least a hundred soldiers on both sides were killed in fighting on Tuesday.

Emmanuel Macron “said his great concern about these new clashes and insisted on the need to intensify negotiation efforts” between the two countries. He recalled his “willingness to contribute to it in conjunction with all the partners, in particular the European Union”, added the French presidency.

“Respect for territorial integrity”

The French president also spoke overnight from Monday to Tuesday with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian. He then called for “respect for the territorial integrity of Armenia”. Azerbaijan, for its part, accused Armenia of “intensely” violating the ceasefire announced by Russia.

The European Union called for a cessation of hostilities and announced that the President of the European Council Charles Michel, who is leading a mediation between Yerevan and Baku, would discuss with the two belligerents. US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken called on the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to urge them to achieve peace.
