The deportation of Anna Sorokin from New York to Germany failed at the last minute. The imposter has her lawyer to thank for this.

She was supposed to land at the airport in Frankfurt am Main today: Anna Sorokin was supposed to be deported to Germany by the US authorities. But the United Airlines scheduled flight, which took off around 9 p.m. local time, arrived in the Rhine-Main area without the 31-year-old impostor. This is reported by both “Der Spiegel” and the “Bild” newspaper, citing their own sources. Apparently her lawyers managed to get a reprieve at the last minute.

Sorokin is said to have been about to leave for the airport when her lawyers got the good news for her. Accordingly, an appeal against the deportation was successful and was subsequently aborted. As her lawyer Manny Arora told the “Bild” newspaper, the US authorities could “legally not deport Sorokin until at least March 17”. Another application is also planned “to prevent deportation.”

According to the US immigration authorities, their departure is still planned. Formally, it is not a question of deportation, but of removal, since Sorokin has overstayed her visa. It is currently unclear whether further objections to this will be successful.

In Germany, Anna Sorokin would be a free woman

The German-Russian imposter became known through the Netflix series “Inventing Anna”. It tells the incredible story of their scam. Under the name of Anna Delvey, Sorokin managed to swindle tens of thousands of dollars in loans from US banks. Under the pretense of being a wealthy heiress, she owed luxury hotel bills and expensive purchases.

In 2019, Sorokin was sentenced to jail and $199,000 in restitution. She should now be deported from prison. Since Sorokin became well known in the USA through the Netflix series, she wants to stay in the States. Should she return to Germany, she does not have to fear another prison sentence here. With no warrant out, she would be a free woman.
