The former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution Maaßen wants to leave the CDU. This was announced by the new head of the right-wing conservative Values Union. This prevented him from being excluded.
Hans-Georg Maaßen made the announcement briefly and succinctly on the Internet platform X, formerly Twitter. There he writes: “I decided today to end my membership in the CDU.”
The former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution explained that the party had given up its values and basic beliefs in recent years. It only gives the impression of being a bourgeois alternative to the red-green coalition, but ultimately it is just a variant, Maaßen continued. He believes that the CDU under party leader Friedrich Merz can no longer be reformed. The 61-year-old also announces that he will concentrate on building the Union of Values as a new bourgeois party.
Party leadership had announced expulsion
Maaßen joined the CDU in 1978. By deciding to leave the party, he forestalls being kicked out. The party leadership had announced that members of the new party would have to leave the CDU.
Maaßen is the chairman of the right-wing conservative Values Union, which was originally founded as a group within the CDU and CSU – with the aim of giving the union a more conservative image. As a conservative-liberal party, the Union of Values also wants to take part in the state elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg in September.
