The former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution Maaßen wants to expand the conservative association Values ​​Union into a party. She is already scheduled to take part in this year’s state elections. It would be the second party founded within a few weeks.

The CDU politician and former President of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen, says he is preparing to found a new party. The members of the conservative association Values ​​Union could decide on steps to achieve this at a general meeting on January 20th in Erfurt, Maaßen told the dpa news agency.

“The party could already run in the upcoming East German state elections,” wrote the 61-year-old Maaßen. It said it would work with all parties that support this program and “that are ready for a change in policy in Germany.” This year there are state elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg.

At the general meeting a decision should be made about transferring the naming rights to a newly founded party called Values ​​Union. The previous association of the same name should therefore become a support association “that aims to support conservative politics in Germany”. T-online first reported on Maaßen’s plans.

Second party founded within a short time

After the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance, which plans to launch as a party next week, a second new formation could shake up the party structure in Germany this year. Both groups also aim to steal votes from the AfD. However, it is relatively difficult for new parties to establish themselves nationwide and establish themselves over a long period of time. To do this, you must establish regional associations and have a corresponding number of members and officials.

According to its own information, the Union of Values ​​has around 4,000 members. Maaßen has been the chairman for about a year. The 61-year-old is a CDU member, but expulsion proceedings are underway against him.

The Union of Values ​​was very close to the CDU and CSU for a long time, but is not a party group. The Union of Values ​​is considered particularly conservative and sometimes criticized the CDU’s line under former Chancellor Angela Merkel. Last year it became clear that the CDU federal chairman Friedrich Merz and the party leadership were not ready for a change in policy, said Maaßen.
