It’s a real happy ending: Liverpool professional footballer Luis Diaz met his father for the first time after he was released from hostage custody. The father was kidnapped by a rebel group in Colombia three weeks ago.
It was a cathartic reunion after dramatic days: for the first time since The Colombian international Luis Díaz met his father in a kidnapping. “Thank God that we can be together as a family again,” the Liverpool professional wrote on Instagram on Tuesday and published an emotional photo of himself and his father.
The Colombian Football Association also shared pictures of the event on the X platform, formerly Twitter, and wrote: “We are a family.” The 26-year-old is currently in his home country for a World Cup qualifier.
Luis Diaz’s mother quickly freed
Luis Manuel Díaz and his wife were abducted by a rebel group unit on October 28 in the Guajira department in the northeast of the country. The Liverpool striker’s mother was released shortly afterwards; the father only after almost two weeks on Thursday of last week. The Catholic Church and a UN commission were involved in his release by the left-wing guerrilla organization ELN.
The suspects behind the kidnapping had been identified, the police said at the weekend. Among them is the criminal contract group “Los Primos” (the Cousins). Four suspects were arrested.
