Dajana Eitberger was crowned world champion at the Luge World Championships in Oberhof. The first four places for women went to German drivers. Afterwards, Felix Loch could also celebrate.

In her last season as a single pilot, Dajana Eitberger fulfilled her long-awaited dream of winning the world championship. In the sprint competitions on her home track in Oberhof, the 32-year-old from Thuringia, who wants to switch to doubles next winter, won with a lead of 0.001 seconds over defending champion Julia Taubitz. Third place went to Anna Berreiter (+0.028 seconds), fourth place went to Merle Fräbel (+0.044 seconds), the fourth German starter in the field.

“I can now call myself a little world champion,” said Eitberger afterwards on ZDF, with a view to the decision on Saturday. Nevertheless, it feels “really good.” Taubitz was also visibly satisfied with her performance in view of a “not perfect” run: “Of course it’s great that we made a small German championship out of it,” she said, looking at the quadruple success.

Loch is crowned world champion

At the end of the sprint race, the men started in single-seaters. And in the fourth race on Friday, Team Germany celebrated for the fourth time: Felix Loch triumphed just ahead of the Austrian Jonas Müller (+0.07). Bronze went to Loch’s teammate Max Langenhan, who was 12 hundredths behind Loch. David Nössler in ninth (+0.32) and Timon Grancagnolo in tenth (+0.33) completed a good German performance.

“Incredible. 15 years after I was at the top in Oberhof for the first time, this is really a very special victory,” said the new world champion on ZDF. Bronze winner Langenhan was also satisfied: “Until now, it was only enough for the junior level for a podium at a World Championships. Now finally here too.”

Germans favored for the main races

With eight out of twelve possible medals – too the doubles were successful – the German tobogganists are the big favorites in the main races on Saturday and Sunday.
