Luca Visentini: The Fallen Flag Bearer of the Italian Left – Opinion

Of

Oliver Meier

Sometimes the road from poetry to the prose of life is not very far, at other times it is frighteningly short. Luca Visentini (53 years old, from Trieste, trade unionist and part-time poet, four books published) until recently had a career full of successes, promotions and honours. It’s been a month since he was elected general secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation in Melbourne, Australia – the supreme champion of the rights and protection of workers around the world – and quite triumphantly, with a brilliant result. Visentini had earned his reputation in the same capacity at the European Trade Union Confederation that he had previously chaired for seven years. He was always known for being easy to get along with, a charming networker. Italy’s left was proud of this man who carried their flag out into the world.
