Two people died when a small plane crashed near Wilhelmshaven. According to current knowledge, the accident happened on Monday when the ultralight aircraft was approaching Jade-Weser Airport, as the police announced on Monday.

According to the information, the approximately 60-year-old pilot started with a small propeller plane for an excursion from the airfield in Mariensiel. Due to a technical defect, he steered the Roland Aircraft Z602 back in the direction of the airfield shortly after take-off. The plane then crashed on approach to land.

According to the police, the pilot was a man born in 1963. The police initially did not release any further information about the victim. The identity of the second victim could not be determined for the time being.

The cause of the accident was also initially unclear. The Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation is responsible for determining the reasons for the crash. Aircraft accident investigation staff arrived at the scene of the accident on Monday afternoon. The Oldenburg public prosecutor’s office is also investigating the case.

The Jade-Weser-Airport is an airfield south of Wilhelmshaven on the Jade Bay. It has two runways and is used by business and hobby pilots. In addition to microlight aircraft, helicopters and motor gliders also take off there.
