A Bundeswehr soldier is said to have shot four people during the night in the Lower Saxony communities of Scheeßel and Bothel (Rotenburg (Wümme) district, between Hamburg and Bremen). According to the public prosecutor’s office and the police, there is also a child among the victims. Further details about the identity of the dead were not initially known.

Arrest after fatal shooting in Lower Saxony

“The currently suspected Bundeswehr soldier turned himself in shortly after the crime was committed and was arrested by police forces,” the authorities said in a statement. The investigation into the background to the crime is ongoing. “A motive in the family environment cannot be ruled out,” it said. Crime scenes should be residential buildings. The police are on a large scale.

The DPA news agency reported on an operation in the Von Düring barracks in Rotenburg. Traces were secured there. It is unclear whether the perpetrator fired with a Bundeswehr weapon.
