Lower Bavaria: floods after storms – Bavaria

Thunderstorms and heavy rains in Lower Bavaria on Thursday night caused flooded streets, full cellars and fallen trees. In Passau, a car got stuck in a flooded underpass, the police said. The driver was therefore able to save himself from the water.

In Künzing (Deggendorf district), masses of water from an overflow basin flooded the cellars of several houses. In Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg (Straubing-Bogen district), the public viewing of the soccer game between Germany and Hungary had to be canceled due to the heavy rain.

So far, nothing was known about the amount of property damage. According to initial findings, there were no injuries. A total of around 80 storm reports due to the thunderstorm front, which had moved across the southern and eastern part of Lower Bavaria in particular, were received by the Lower Bavaria police headquarters in Straubing – including some false alarms and false reports about lightning strikes in houses and a church.

In Munich, too, it had thunderstorms and rained heavily during the European Championship match. The German weather service had warned of the storms. The meteorologists expected that there would be heavy rain with amounts of precipitation between 25 liters per square meter and 40 liters per square meter per hour as well as gusts of wind at speeds of around 70 kilometers per hour. The game kicked off in the pouring rain.

In the end there were around 500 missions by the fire brigade in Munich. Mostly it was about problems caused by the rain such as flooded streets, as the police said. In some cases, vehicles could not continue. According to initial findings, there were no injuries. In addition, according to the fire brigade, the power went out during the night in some parts of the city because the rain paralyzed transformer stations.

In Upper Bavaria there was a car accident on Autobahn 94 because of the heavy rain. Two people were slightly injured on Wednesday evening, the police said. In the accident, a 33-year-old man skidded on a wet road near Markt Schwaben (Ebersberg district), hit the middle plank several times and came to a stop in the opposite direction. A 30-year-old couldn’t brake in time and drove into the 33-year-old’s car. The highway had to be closed for about an hour.
