Controversies, legendary quotes and the Megan Fox moment: The sixth season of the Netflix show “Love is blind” shows what fans love about reality TV. That’s why the current episodes are so good.
There aren’t many reality TV moments that will be remembered years later, but the sixth season of Love Is Blind is brimming with reality TV gold. Dramaturgically well-placed villains (Jeramey, Matthew) and absurd twists (Kenneth) mix between heartwarming insights into the search for true love (Amy and Johnny). And then there are the scenes that say much more about the supposedly “blind” love experiment than expected. Right at the forefront: the MeganFox moment.
The storyline surrounding candidate Chelsea shows what happens when expectations, an insecure self-image and competitive pressure build up to a devastating manipulation. In case there’s anyone else who hasn’t binged the new episodes of the Netflix show in one weekend, when contestant Jimmy hesitates between two women, Chelsea resorts to a desperate measure. “Do you look like a celebrity?” the stewardess asks the software salesman. She is always told on the plane that she looks exactly like a person. “What’s her name… MGK’s girlfriend or wife?” she asks innocently and lets Jimmy draw his conclusions. “Megan Fox? You look like Megan Fox?” he can hardly believe his luck. It’s very likely that his decision to join Chelsea will come this second – and it doesn’t matter that the Netflix show is called “Love is blind”.
“Love is blind”: Does Chelsea look like Megan Fox?
The moment was a delight for TikTok and Co.: Does Chelsea look like Megan Fox or not? It’s a bit like the online phenomenon about the blue or gold dress: what color is it? Everyone has an opinion about it. It’s not about any similarities, but rather about the manipulative aspect of the matter: Megan Fox is not just any celebrity, Megan Fox has been considered the ultimate sex symbol since her breakthrough in “Transformers.” Whether she wanted to or not, Chelsea tripped herself up. Even if the real Megan Fox had walked through the door, she probably wouldn’t have matched the image in Jimmy’s head.
The first meeting between him and Chelsea – one of the highlights of the show every season anyway – is correspondingly painful, as the two react so differently. While Jimmy is visibly recovering from the disappointment, Chelsea is beaming over the moon. As a viewer, you can’t help but feel for both of them.
“Love is blind” is always good when ideals collide with reality – and that already in the so-called pods, the cubicles in which the first dates take place behind partition walls. With Jimmy’s other favorite Jessica, a single mother is a contestant for the first time this season. It is significant to see how little her motherhood fits into Jimmy’s fairytale image of great love when she finally tells him about her daughter. He emphasized again and again after the revelation that he had had a hard day.
Netflix is making good reality TV again with this season
Luckily for Netflix and viewers, Jessica delivers a now legendary speech when Jimmy finally dumps her for Megan Fox – pardon: Chelsea. “You’ll be breathless when you see me and realize what you’ve missed (…) You’ll need your EpiPen to breathe again!” she says, before ending with a casual “God bless you “Jimmy” leaves the pods.
What also gives the season depth are the conversations about topics that are actually relevant to a relationship or even marriage. Gone are the days when we had to listen to contestants like Season 2’s Shayne rave about his love of crop tops. Jeramey and Sarah Ann exchange their views on the subject of abortion – an extremely hotly debated topic in the USA. Amy and Johnny talk about contraceptives and also consider a vasectomy.
The shared faith plays a major role between Brittany and Kenneth, and a conversation also shows the two intensively exploring the problems that could come their way because Kenneth is black and Brittany is white. However, the relationship seems to fail due to Kenneth’s smartphone addiction – a topic that many couples are likely to be familiar with. There’s even a term for constantly staring at your cell phone in social situations, called “phubbing.” The fact that the candidates – including quite a few with large social media followings – have to hand over their cell phones during the get-to-know-you period is certainly another attraction of the show.
The carelessness with which Kenneth then announces his separation to his fiancée would have caused an outcry in any other season, but this “Love is blind” season has so many good locations that it almost gets lost. When candidate Laura cleverly convicts her fiancé Jeramey of a big lie, or when Chelsea suddenly starts counting how many times a day Jimmy kisses her in real life, viewers get what they turn on reality TV for: the entire spectrum of human emotions.
