This is a film that feels good! Love and monsters by Michael Matthews, available from Wednesday on Netflix, plunges a boy not really good at fighting in a postapocalyptic universe populated by very large monsters.
You just have to let yourself be carried away and carried away without trying to think too much to take great pleasure in this entertainment as fresh as it is completely uninhibited. 20 minutes describes the strengths that Love and monsters hides in his hero’s backpack.
The film is better than its pitch
Imagining a post-teen sluggish as wallpaper paste braving dangers to find his girlfriend he has not seen in seven years is hardly a dream. And yet, it works. Love and monsters is more like an adventure film between Welcome to Zombieland and Jumanji than a goofy bluette. It’s tenderly funny and awfully tender.
Dylan O’Brien is cute as hell
Dylan O’Brien, defector from the series Teen wolf and the saga Labyrinth does the job perfectly as a hero in spite of himself who hardens as and when very varied adventures. The fact that he meets a more resourceful dog than him makes his character even more endearing. Their duet brings great freshness to the whole.
There is Michael Rooker
You may not know his name but Michael Rooker is one of the most striking faces in American cinema. The terrible Yondu of Guardians of the Galaxy, it was him and the maniac of Henry, Portrait of a serial killer too ! There, he shows himself happily gruff as a hunter who teaches the hero to transform big beasts into pate meat.
The girls have it (courage)
Whether they are adults like the sparkling wine Jessica henwick or child like the fun one
Ariana Greenblatt, the girls have strong characters trained in the hard law of “eat or be eaten”. Waiting for Prince Charming isn’t really their thing and their personalities are as explosive as their weapons. They know how to impose themselves against men and monsters.
The bugs are really cool
Who says “monster movie” says “monsters”. Those from Love and monsters are so funny they don’t really scare you. They are however so successful that the visual effects of the film are cited at the Oscars 2021. We really recommend the giant crab with the big eyes. It’s very simple: we would almost forget to think of mayonnaise because it is so expressive.
