Lotto: Brits count on 2.60 pounds – and win 62 million

They had expected a profit of 2.60 pounds – and were suddenly a good 61 million pounds richer – the equivalent of 71.25 million euros. A British couple made a fortune in the Euro Millions lottery. The news, which will change the 54-year-old’s life, reached Debbie and Richard Nuttall from Colne in Fuerteventura, northern England, where they were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.

“We’re dazed, it’s surreal, this is a massive amount of money,” Richard Nuttall told reporters in the town of Clitheroe on Wednesday. “You dream of winning the lottery, but you never believe you’ll do it – and then you do.”

This time too, the couple didn’t believe in the jackpot. Richard Nuttall said he received an email from the lottery while on holiday saying that a £2.60 prize had been credited to his account and told his wife. “Great, we can buy a ham sandwich with it,” Debbie Nuttall joked. But when Richard checked his emails again in the evening, he found another message from the lottery: He should please check his account again. “I looked and it said, ‘You’ve won £61,708,231, call this number,'” he said.

The jackpot for the January 30 draw totaled more than £123.4 million. The Nuttalls split the winnings with a player from Spain. First purchase from the prize: new golf clubs and a bag for golf fan Richard Nuttall. The couple now want to quit their jobs.
