Lothar Matthäus coaches the E-Youth Team of TSV Grünwald – Munich

The team in which his eight-year-old son plays was looking for a new coach – and was immediately “on fire” for the record international.

Record-breaking national soccer player Lothar Matthäus enjoys coaching his son’s youth team. “I want the best for the boys, that they have fun and maybe develop further,” said the 61-year-old on Thursday in Munich. The Franconian trains TSV Grünwald in the Munich district two to three times a week, for which his eight-year-old son also plays. “It’s about bringing the sport closer to the children so that they get to know each other and sometimes lose.” First, the TV broadcaster Sky reported on Matthäus’ new sideline.

The former world-class player and current TV expert became aware of the club through his son. The decision to step in as a coach was then only a matter of form. “Last year there was a good coach who had to step down due to time constraints,” said Matthäus. “Since I was always there anyway, I thought: If I’ve always been off the pitch, I can also be on the pitch.” TSV Grünwald was directly “on fire” for him.

Matthäus’ son gets along well with the prominent new coach. “He likes it, I drive him to school almost every morning and of course we talk about football,” said Matthäus with a smile. “It’s not the easiest thing for him to have such a famous father as a coach.”
