Lothar Matthäus as youth coach at TSV Grünwald – Munich district

As a footballer, Lothar Matthäus achieved almost everything, but his coaching career was only moderately successful. Now the record national player coaches his son’s U13 team in Grünwald between his appointments as a TV expert – and clearly takes this task seriously.

At some point in the second half, a man with white hair approaches. He was probably already cheering in front of the television in 1990 when Lothar Matthäus lifted the World Cup trophy into the Rome night sky. On this cold, wet April Sunday, however, the fan failed quite miserably. During a Grünwalder U13 youth soccer game, he wants an autograph from the coach, who was once a world footballer and is still Germany’s most-record national player. But at this moment he is completely focused on what his boys are doing on the pitch against SG Eislfing/Griesstätt. A short defensive hand gesture and the senior fan walks away.
