Lost Place in the Harz: This abandoned rest home is in Alexisbad

In the Harz Mountains, the towers of a striking building rise into the sky between treetops, rushing natural streams and beautiful nature. They belong to a former rest home in Alexisbad – the district of Harzgerode in Saxony-Anhalt.

During GDR times, employees of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) could take a relaxing vacation in this building – and not without reason: the building is located in the Selketal, where romantic forests, river valleys and untouched nature can be found. For example, the Selke waterfall, the Magdtrappe and the Köthener Hütte are nearby. The “Alexisbad” stop on the Selketalbahn, which belongs to the Harz narrow-gauge railway, is also not far away.

Visitors must be careful when visiting, as access to the building is not permitted. The front of the imposing building with its striking, pointed towers is clearly visible from the street. From there you can take photos undisturbed.

“Urbexer” and Lost Places:

So-called “Urbexers” have a dangerous hobby: They visit forgotten, abandoned or dilapidated places that are sometimes in danger of collapsing. They usually have good camera equipment on board to take photos and videos of the seats. However, the exact address of the lost place is never revealed – this is considered an absolute no-go in the community. This is intended to prevent people from traveling to the places who cannot do anything with the abandoned beauty and are likely to cause destruction.

In addition to the general risk of injury, visiting such a place can have legal consequences: It is often assumed that empty and abandoned buildings no longer have an owner. A dangerous misconception. Urbexers who enter such premises or buildings without official permission are trespassing. It is always a good idea to ask the owner for permission beforehand.
