Lost Place in the Harz: There is an abandoned convalescent home in Alexisbad

In the Harz mountains, between treetops, rushing natural streams and beautiful nature, the towers of a striking building rise into the sky. They belong to a former convalescent home in Alexisbad – the district of Harzgerode in Saxony-Anhalt.

During GDR times, employees of the Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) could take a relaxing holiday in this building – and not without reason: the building is located in the Selketal, where romantic forests, river valleys and unspoilt nature can be found. For example, the Selke waterfall, the Magdtrappe and the Köthener Hütte are nearby. The “Alexisbad” stop on the Selketalbahn, which belongs to the Harz narrow-gauge railway, is also not far away.

Visitors must be careful when exploring as access to the building is not permitted. On the other hand, the front of the imposing building with the striking, pointed towers is clearly visible from the street. From there you can take undisturbed photos.

“Urbexer” and Lost Places:

So-called “urbexers” have a dangerous hobby: they visit forgotten, abandoned or dilapidated places that are in danger of collapsing. They usually have good camera equipment on board to take photos and videos of the seats. However, the exact address of the Lost Place is never revealed – that counts as an absolute no-go in the community. This is to prevent people from traveling to the places that cannot do anything with the abandoned beauty and presumably cause destruction.

In addition to the general risk of injury, visiting such a place can have legal consequences: It is often assumed that buildings that are empty and thought to be abandoned no longer have an owner. A dangerous misconception. Urbexers who enter such a site or building without official permission commit trespassing. It is always a good idea to ask the owner for permission beforehand.
