End of the line semifinals – Angelique Kerber missed the final at the tennis tournament in Wimbledon. The German lost to world number one Ashleigh Barty in two sets on Thursday (July 8th, 2021), and still did not feel unhappy.
“I lost, but I’m taking this trip with me,” said Angelique Kerber after the 3: 6, 6: 7 (3: 7) in a high-class Wimbledon semi-final against Ashleigh Barty. The 33-year-old added: “I am infinitely grateful that I made it, because I think that some people have written me off in the last few months. Nevertheless, there was great faith in me, so I’m very proud of me and my team. ”
Barty: “Angie got the best out of me”
There was also praise from the opponent: “That was one of the best matches I have ever played. Angie got the best out of me,” said Barty after moving into the Wimbledon final and added: “It was an amazing match from the first Rally. I knew I had to be this good to beat them. ”
Three breakballs not used
Kerber started promisingly against the favored Barty, but left three breakballs unused in the first game. Thereupon the self-confident Barty took over the command and in turn took the serve from Kerber.
Barty dominated the game and had an even stronger answer to every strong blow by the Germans. Although Kerber had another break ball when the score was 5: 3, Barty won the first set easily 6: 3.
Quick break in the second set
Kerber also started well in the second set – and this time it worked with the early break. Now the German was fully in the game, because she also managed her own serve with pressure, while Barty suddenly made simple mistakes.
Kerber quickly led 3-0 and was well on the way to winning the set – but then Barty took Kerber’s serve to zero, and it was only 4: 5. In the end, the tiebreaker had to decide. And Barty won it confidently.
In the final against Pliskova
Barty will face the Czech Karolina Pliskova in the final on Saturday (July 10th, 2021). The 29-year-old prevailed 5: 7, 6: 4, 6: 4 against Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus. The 23-year-old was number two in London.
For the former world number one Pliskova, it is the second final in one of the four Grand Slam tournaments. In 2016 she lost the final against Kerber at the US Open. After her success at the 2019 French Open, 25-year-old Barty wants to win her second Grand Slam title and become the first Australian woman to win Wimbledon in 41 years.
Kerber missed her fifth endgame overall
Kerber, on the other hand, missed her third Wimbledon final after 2016 and 2018 as well as her fifth final at one of the four most important tennis events. In 2016 she won the Australian Open and the US Open and lost to Serena Williams at Wimbledon. Two years later, she took revenge against the American on the “sacred turf”.
Doubles specialist Krawietz in the mixed semi-finals
The German tennis professional Kevin Krawietz has meanwhile reached the semi-finals in mixed. The 29-year-old won with his Czech partner Kveta Peschke 6: 3, 6: 7 (3: 7), 9: 7 against Mate Pavic and Gabriela Dabrowski. The duo from Croatia and Canada was seeded at number two.
Krawietz has won the French Open twice with his regular double partner Andreas Mies and is also nominated for the Olympic Games. Since Mies has been injured for a long time, Krawietz competes in Tokyo with Tim Pütz in the men’s doubles.
