Loss for Sony: PlayStation 5 lags behind in production

Sony misses the goals it has set for PS5 production. Last year around three million fewer consoles were produced than originally planned. Now production is to be increased again.

Sony clearly missed its own production targets for the Playstation 5 in the past fiscal year (April 2021 to March 2022). Like “Silicon UK” reported, 11.5 million units were produced. That number is more than three million short of the target of 14.8 million.

The reason for this are still delivery bottlenecks for the required chips. The main triggers for this are restrictions resulting from the corona pandemic.

In the coming year, Sony wants to significantly increase its production of the PS5. The company plans with 18 million units. However, Sony emphasizes that this depends on the delivery situation.

Despite the lower PS5 sales, Sony was able to significantly increase its profits last year. They were 138.6 billion yen (about 1 billion euros) compared to 66.5 billion yen (about 480 million euros) in the previous year. In total, Sony has shipped 19.3 million consoles since the PS5 was launched at the end of 2020.
