Pete Smith is dead. The actor from ‘The Piano’, ‘The Last Warrior’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ was 63 years old.

Pete Smith is dead. The New Zealand actor died on January 29, 2022 in his hometown of Kaitaia. He was 63 years old. His family admitted the death of the performer according to the New Zealand news portal “Stuff” known.

Pete Smith has suffered from kidney disease for seven years, according to his family. Two years ago she was diagnosed with dementia. His son, Poumau Papali’i-Smith, described his father’s death as “bittersweet” as he was now relieved of his suffering. Smith began his acting career in 1985 with the world-renowned end-time drama Quiet Earth – The Last Experiment. It won the Best Supporting Actor award at the New Zealand Film and TV Awards.

From “The Piano” to “The Lord of the Rings”

In the early 1990s, the actor with Maori roots starred in two of the world’s best-known New Zealand films. In 1993 he starred in Jane Campion’s (67) Oscar-winning film “The Piano”. In 1994 he played a leading role in the Maori drama The Last Warrior, which was voted best New Zealand film of all time in 2010.

Pete Smith was also part of the biggest film project ever made in New Zealand, albeit in a small role. In “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” he played one of the six orcs whose actors were named in the credits.
