Lord Of The Lost win ESC preliminary decision 2023

The Hamburg rock band will thus represent Germany in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 on May 13 in Liverpool. Most recently, the No Angels, a group for Germany, competed at the ESC in Belgrade in 2008, since then there have only been solo acts.

Originally, nine acts were in the preliminary round: TRONG, René Miller, Anica Russo, Lonely Spring, Will Church, Patty Gurdy, Ikke Hipgold, Frida Gold and Lord Of The Lost. In the morning, however, the duo Frida Gold had to cancel their participation due to the illness of the singer Alina Süggeler. The votes cast for Frida Gold in the online voting up to that point were not counted.

Voting system for “Our song for Liverpool”

50 percent of the points were awarded by eight juries from Switzerland, the Netherlands, Finland, Spain, Lithuania, Ukraine, Austria and Great Britain, each consisting of five people from the music and show business. Due to the fact that only eight instead of the original nine acts started in the preliminary round, the allocation of points in the voting changed. The eight country juries awarded 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 points to the titles. Compared to the usual ESC points scheme, not only the 7 but also the 5 points were missing. The jury awarded the acts a total of 368 points.

The other 50 percent of the points came from the German audience and consisted of the votes during the show via phone call and text message and online voting. The same number of points, which were distributed by the international juries, were distributed to the eight songs in the percentage ratio of the German televoting.

Search for the German act

Eight acts were initially set for the preliminary round and were selected by the ESC editorial team and an advisory team of national and international music experts. Originally there were 548 submissions on eurovision.de or directly to the NDR ESC editorial team that met the criteria. Artists and bands could also apply via TikTok. Another act was found by voting on the platform. Ikke Hipgold won the vote with 52 percent of the votes and thus a place in the preliminary round.
