Lonely Planet Ranking: These are the top travel destinations for the year 2022

The recently published ranking by “Lonely Planet” reads like a wish list, as if there were currently no travel restrictions due to the pandemic. Because in the coming year tourism will have anything but returned to normal, especially when it comes to long-distance travel.

Last year, “Lonely Planet” waived the “Best in Travel” ranking due to Corona. It was only this year, and thus for the sixteenth time, that the travel book publisher decided to publish a list of the most popular travel destinations.

A distinction is made between the categories of countries, cities and regions among the front runners. First, numerous suggestions from the community of authors, bloggers, scouts, locals and publishing partners were collected. In the next step, these nominations were evaluated by an unspecified “jury of travel experts” and reduced to ten destinations per category.

Song of praise for Freiburg im Breisgau

As a small sensation, the city of Freiburg im Breisgau made it into the edition of the new book “Lonely Planets Best in Travel 2022” – even in third place behind Auckland in New Zealand and Taipei in Taiwan. “The charismatic, environmentally conscious Black Forest metropolis can show many of us a few more tricks on how to live responsibly,” says the reasoning.

By their own account, each country is selected based on its timeliness, unique experiences, wow factor and ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism practices. Lonely Planet describes itself as “the leading travel media company and # 1 travel guide brand worldwide”.

Over the course of almost five decades, the publisher has published more than 145 million travel guides for 221 countries. The travel information is now also reaching a large readership via their website and mobile products.
