The largest airport in Europe before the pandemic with the most passengers continues to limit the number of daily passengers until the winter flight schedule to avoid airport chaos.

Due to a shortage of workers, London’s Heathrow Airport wants to limit the number of passengers taking off there every day until autumn. The airport operator introduced a cap of 100,000 people per day at Heathrow in July.

This regulation should initially apply until the end of September – but will now be extended until the end of October, as the company announced on Monday.

Since the upper limit was introduced, punctuality has increased, there are fewer last-minute cancellations and passengers are no longer waiting so long for their luggage, the airport operator explained. The extension of the regulation until the end of October will strengthen the “confidence” of travelers before the autumn holidays.

The upper limit must be implemented by the airlines that have to cancel flights and can therefore sell fewer tickets. Airport operator Heathrow said on Monday that if the situation improved, the upper limit would be lifted earlier than planned.

There is currently a shortage of staff at airports across Europe. This leads to cancellations and long waiting times at check-in. Other airports have also introduced caps for passengers.
