At the Chaos Computer Club congress a few years ago, a banner hung: “All computers are broken.” What was more of a joke among hackers at the time describes the mood among IT experts this weekend. There are likely to be hundreds of millions of computers and apps around the world open to criminals and other malicious hackers through the same newly discovered vulnerability. Corporate services used by many citizens are also said to be affected, including Apple’s iCloud and services from Amazon. The attacker and the defender are now in a race. Every operator of an affected system must close the security gap before hackers can penetrate and take over the system without permission. Companies are working under time pressure to update their systems.
