For three months, passengers should be able to use local public transport for 9 euros per month on buses and trains. The campaign is expected to start in six weeks.

Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) is confident that the planned 9-euro ticket can be introduced as planned on June 1st.

“I think that’s realistic, at least that’s what the transport associations report back to me,” he said on the sidelines of a party event in Bad Kreuznach, Rhineland-Palatinate. “I think that’s a good date, because we’re going to start reducing the mineral oil tax at the same time.” The aim is to offer citizens an incentive to save energy by using local public transport.

The legislative process should start later this month, Wissing added. “The final votes are already underway.”

The federal government supports the federal states every year with billions for regional rail transport. “Just taking more money into your hands is not always the best way. You also have to reform structures,” said Wissing. He cited digitization, awarding of contracts and better timing of offers as examples. In order to increase the attractiveness of rail transport, for example, better and safer parking facilities for bicycles at train stations are necessary. This is especially true for rural areas.

From June 1st, passengers in local public transport should be able to use buses and trains for 9 euros per month, nationwide and until the end of August. The 9-euro ticket should also be valid for regional traffic, but not for long-distance traffic of Deutsche Bahn – i.e. not for ICE, IC or EC.
