Local public transport: Minister of Transport for a 49-euro ticket

The federal and state transport ministers agree that the nine-euro ticket was a complete success. After a long discussion, a proposal for a nationwide successor model is now on the table.

The transport ministers of the federal and state governments consider a nationwide local transport ticket to be possible as a successor to the 9-euro ticket. This emerges from a resolution paper for the conference of transport ministers, which was presented at a press conference.

“In agreement with the federal government, the conference of transport ministers holds an introductory price of 49 euros per month in a monthly subscription for a possible offer,” it says. The federal and state governments support the fastest possible introduction of the planned digital ticket. However, Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) pointed out that there is still no agreement on the question of financing.

1.5 billion euros each from the federal and state governments

The federal government will provide 1.5 billion euros annually for this from 2023, it said. The goal is funding by the federal states in the same amount. “The federal states are willing to co-finance under the condition of an agreement on the regionalization funds,” said Bremen’s Senator for Transport Maike Schaefer (Greens) as chairwoman of the conference of transport ministers in Bremerhaven.

The federal states continue to demand an increase in regionalization funds from the federal government in order to be able to better finance local transport. According to Schaefer, even the best ticket is useless if there is no bus going.

The model will be reviewed after two years. The ball is now back in the Prime Ministers’ Conference, which must decide on this proposal. The prime ministers have not yet been able to agree on financial issues with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).
