Lloyd’s of London is leaving the insurers’ climate alliance – Economy

In the alliance, the insurers wanted to give themselves uniform rules for an active contribution to climate protection, for example by no longer insuring particularly polluting industries. Now she is on the verge of extinction.

The Climate Alliance, founded just two years ago by major insurers and reinsurers, continues to crumble. Another company, Lloyd’s of London, announced its withdrawal from the Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA) on Friday. Lloyd’s said the move was effective immediately. With Munich Allianz and the French groups AXA and Scor, three other of the eight founding members announced their departure on Thursday.

In this alliance, the insurers wanted to give themselves uniform rules for an active contribution to climate protection, for example by no longer insuring particularly polluting industries. But there was resistance to this, especially in the United States: just this week, the Attorneys General from 23 US states harshly criticized the NZIA’s actions in an open letter and questioned the admissibility of the agreements. Lloyd’s of London said it would stick to its individual targets to limit climate change. The NZIA members had committed to making their insurance portfolios free of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
