Bolsonaro downplays Omicron variant outbreak that “didn’t kill anyone” in Brazil
Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Wednesday downplayed the dizzying increase in Covid-19 cases with the arrival of the Omicron variant which, according to experts, could soon again overload hospitals.
“Omicron did not kill anyone. The person who died already had very serious problems, in particular with the lungs”, declared the head of state in an interview with the Gazeta Brasil site.
This patient from the state of Goias, in the center-west of the country, was the first confirmed death in Brazil from the Omicron variant, according to the municipal authorities of Aparecida de Goiania.
With Omicron, the risk of hospitalization halved
An American study conducted on nearly 70,000 people who tested positive for Covid-19 states that the risk of hospitalization and death is significantly reduced with the Omicron variant compared to what is observed with Delta.
People infected with Omicron had half the risk of being hospitalized than those with Delta, according to this work, which takes into account the growing level of immunity in the population. The risk of being placed in intensive care was reduced by about 75%, and the risk of dying by more than 90%.
