BELGIUM: TWO HIPPOPOTAMES TESTED POSITIVE
Two hippos from the Antwerp zoo (northern Belgium), suffering from a runny nose, tested positive for Covid-19, the animal park announced on Friday, which sees it as a world first for this species.
These animals always have a wet nose but “this time, they expelled glanders that I had tested as a precaution,” said zoo veterinarian Francis Vercammen, quoted in a statement.
“I made the decision to submit the samples to the Covid-19 test, which gave this surprising result. To my knowledge, this is the first contamination identified in this species. In the world, this virus has mainly been reported in great apes and felines, ”he said.
