Something historic is happening in New York City today: With Donald Trump, for the first time in US history, a former president has to answer in court. The 76-year-old, who announced his renewed candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, traveled from Florida on Monday because he had to appear in person for the indictment before the court in the borough of Manhattan. Only then will he and his lawyers find out exactly what crimes the prosecutor is accusing the Republican of. So far, there has been talk of around 30 charges.

The basis for the indictment is said to be a hush money payment to the porn actress Stormy Daniels. Daniels claims to have had sex with Trump in 2006. Ten years later, when he ran for president, he reportedly instructed his then-attorney, Michael Cohen, to pay Daniels $130,000 to keep the alleged affair private. Trump admits that money has flowed – after all, paying hush money is not illegal. However, the real estate mogul could have violated campaign finance laws – which could now be his undoing.
