Donald Trump is the first ex-US President to be indicted. The city has been preparing for this moment for days. Trump himself has to be there for the indictment to be read out. Follow everything important in the live blog.
Something historic is happening in New York City today: With Donald Trump, for the first time in US history, a former president has to answer in court. The 76-year-old, who announced his renewed candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, traveled from Florida on Monday because he had to appear in person for the indictment before the court in the borough of Manhattan. Only then will he and his lawyers find out exactly what crimes the prosecutor is accusing the Republican of. So far, there has been talk of around 30 charges.

The basis for the indictment is said to be a hush money payment to the porn actress Stormy Daniels. Daniels claims to have had sex with Trump in 2006. Ten years later, when he ran for president, he reportedly instructed his then-attorney, Michael Cohen, to pay Daniels $130,000 to keep the alleged affair private. Trump admits that money has flowed – after all, paying hush money is not illegal. However, the real estate mogul could have violated campaign finance laws – which could now be his undoing.

Trump has just entered the courtroom.
The ex-president walked past the reporter without many words and with a grim expression on his face, just after his lawyers. Now the actual indictment reading should begin.

It is still completely unclear whether there will be a police photo of Donald Trump from New York. But the ex-president is already trying to capitalize on the rumors about the so-called mugshot. Trump already sells T-shirts with a fake police picture and the note “Not Guilty” on his website. Cost of the shirt: $47 – an indication that if re-elected Trump would be the 47th President of the United States.

The reading of the more than 30 charges in the courtroom is closed to the public. Judge Juan Merchan had rejected a media request on Monday evening. Reporters, photographers and TV cameras have to wait in the court corridor.
After the so-called arrangement, Trump will plead not guilty, according to his lawyer.

It remains to be seen when and if we will see the mugshot that many (possibly including Trump himself) have been eagerly awaiting. In New York, unlike many other states, defendants’ “mugshots” are not automatically released.
The photos of some celebrities in police custody have achieved cult status in the past:

By the way: Juan M. Merchan, the Richter, who is about to face Trump, already has experience with the ex-president.
In late 2022, he led a five-week tax fraud trial against his family business, the Trump Organization. Unsurprisingly, Merchan did not earn any sympathy points from the ex-president.
“The judge who was ‘assigned’ to my witch hunt case, a ‘case’ that has NEVER been tried before, HATES ME,” Trump wrote on Truth Social last week
