Literature in Munich: Sven Hanuschek about his Arno Schmidt biography – Munich

Hardly anyone has dealt with Arno Schmidt in as much detail as the literary scholar Sven Hanuschek. A conversation about a loner and language artist who still evokes both admiration and shaking of the head to this day.

Arno Schmidt (1914 – 1979) is one of the greats of literature after 1945 – the writer, notorious as a loner, who last lived in seclusion in the famous village of Bargfeld in der Heide, still triggers feelings of admiration and shaking of heads to this day. Arno Schmidt doesn’t always make it easy for his readers, not only because of his idiosyncratic spelling. The Munich literary scholar and LMU professor Sven Hanuschek followed in his footsteps for a biography (Hanser-Verlag) for years.
