Sometimes you get a sense of where a tournament is headed at a certain moment. There are starting points on the pitch, off the pitch, and at some point at the controversial World Cup in Qatar, one thing felt undisputed: that it would become Lionel Messi’s tournament, that Messi would lead his Argentines to the title. Sometimes a course of events is mapped out on the inside: it has to turn out exactly the way it does in the end.
