After two hours, Benjamin Limbach can even smile again. The shine on his high forehead still reveals something of the tension with which North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister of Justice went into this crisis meeting of the Legal Affairs Committee in the state parliament. But the worst is behind him. Now the 54-year-old lawyer even manages to make a little joke. To explain why – after weeks of protests – he is now revoking his plan to split up a main department in the Cologne public prosecutor’s office and thus presumably weaken explosive investigations against tax fraudsters worth millions, the Rhinelander refers to his compatriot Konrad Adenauer.
