There is something frivolous about spring in war. The parks are carpeted with crocuses, new beginnings are in the air, and the promenades are blazing with light. Lviv has recovered from the initial shock and is showing a willingness to resist by returning to everyday life. The cafés are full, a few of the expensive shops have their windows boarded up, but the Prospekt der Freiheit – formerly Lenin Prospect – still runs as broadly and confidently towards Zygmunt Gorgolewski’s magnificent opera building as the drum roll towards the fanfare.
