Life cycle assessment: Are cloth diapers the more sustainable alternative?

In Germany alone, millions of disposable diapers end up in the trash every day – a major burden on the environment. But models made of fabric are not inherently better.

According to the non-profit company Goldeimer, which campaigns for a sustainable “sanitary transition”, a “diaper forest” will soon grow in Hamburg: 50 babies will provide the company with their remains, placed in special disposable diapers; Goldeimer then wants to test whether the used deposits can be composted and used as fertilizer for an area full of trees.
