Life After the Horror: Of Children Who Survived the Holocaust. – Politics

With the children, the National Socialists wanted to destroy the future of the Jewish people. Nevertheless, they were not considered victims of the Holocaust for a long time. Historian Rebecca Clifford has spoken to many of them – children who came out of nowhere and who often find themselves questioning their lives, where they belong.

Leora survived World War II as a little girl, hidden by a peasant woman in France. She remembers that the woman was very poor, that they starved and froze together when winter came. And she knows they loved each other. After the end of the war, Leora – like many other rescued children – was separated from her protector. This personal loss was to be followed by an even more monstrous one for her future life. She didn’t know her name and nobody could help her. There was no hope for them to find their parents who might still be alive, their siblings, or loved ones. So she was and remained a child who “came out of nowhere”.
