The German soccer champions Bayer Leverkusen lost in the final of the Europa League against the Italian club Atalanta Bergamo – and thus missed out on the possible treble. The Werkself from the Rhineland suffered their first defeat in Dublin, Ireland, with a 3-0 (0-2) defeat against Bergamo in their 52nd competitive game of the season. Bayer missed out on their second international title after winning the UEFA Cup in 1988.

Former Leipzig player Ademola Lookman scored all three goals for Atalanta (12th, 26th and 75th minutes). It is the first international trophy for the club, which eliminated Liverpool FC under coach Jürgen Klopp on the way to the final. Bayer still has the chance to secure the double in the DFB Cup final against second division team 1. FC Kaiserslautern on Saturday.
