Léon Gautier, last French survivor of the Normandy landings in 1944, is dead

Léon Gautier, the last survivor of the 177 Frenchmen to have landed on June 6, 1944 in Normandy, died Monday at the age of 100, the Caen Memorial announced on Twitter, confirming information from West France.

Léon Gautier was the last member of the Kieffer commando, a battalion of 177 marine riflemen who had landed on the Normandy coast. He died Monday at 7:40 a.m. in a hospital in Caen, said Romain Bail, the mayor of Ouistreham (Calvados).
