There are always arguments and riots in outdoor pools. The situation escalated in Berlin-Neukölln. One reason for the emergency is the high level of sick leave among the staff.

Given the clashes in The Berlin Greens parliamentary group calls for a ban on violent offenders in open-air swimming pools. If “a few hotheads” in the pools deliberately went too far, that would be unacceptable and, above all, a risk for the employees in the pools, explained the group’s domestic policy spokesman, Vasili Franco.

“Therefore, in the case of violent multiple offenders, a Berlin-wide ban should be imposed on the Berlin pools.” In general, a clever security concept is required that focuses on prevention and the responsiveness of security personnel. Franco did not comment on the question of how the house ban should be implemented and controlled.

“Swimming pools are social places where everyone should feel comfortable,” added the spokeswoman for sports policy for the parliamentary group, Klara Schedlich. “If baths are now closed, it means that there are fewer rooms for people to stay and cool off in the heat.” For young people in particular, an inexpensive leisure activity in the summer months would then be lost. “That shouldn’t become the norm.” Especially for families affected by poverty, more and not less good offers for the holidays are needed.

The renewed debate about violence in outdoor pools started on Sunday evening because the Columbiabad in Berlin-Neukölln had to be closed and cleared early. The reason for this was a dispute between young people and employees of the pool and employees of the security service, according to the pool operator. As has now become known in a report by the “Tagesspiegel”, employees of the baths had already sent a letter to the management of the baths in mid-June, in which they reported regular threats of violence against employees and guests.
